The architecture of an “ideal” prison

Antonio Tomishko’s two blocks meet at central hubs from which four wings radiate. The geometry itself was designed as an instrument of observation and control.

Inside the two Crosses

Iron galleries, staircases, corridors and cell doors form an almost endless perspective. The exact spaces visited depend on the approved route and site conditions on the day.

Authenticity without display cases

Layers of paint, rusted metal, bars and traces from the complex’s final working years preserve the feeling of a place only recently vacated. Nothing is romanticised or turned into spectacle.

Lives behind the walls

Kresty is understood through lives from different eras — famous and unknown, convicted and awaiting judgement. The narrative is grounded in fact, context and respect for human memory.

Before the transformation begins

The complex ceased operating as a detention centre in 2017. Today access is possible only through approved routes, before the historic site begins its next chapter.

Private visit requirements

Guests must be 18 or older. Original identification, closed stable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are required, as part of the route is outdoors and in unheated spaces. Personal phone photography only. Late or intoxicated visitors cannot be admitted.

We need every guest’s full name and date of birth in advance. Please bring the original identity document used for registration.

Photography rules are confirmed with access. Personal photography on a phone is normally the only format permitted.
